Release announcement

Ubuntu MATE 14.04 is currently available for three architectures:

  • 32-bit (i386): For PCs with less than 2 GB of RAM with an Intel or AMD processor. Ageing PCs, low-RAM systems and older Intel-based Apple Macintosh systems should choose this.
  • 64-bit (amd64): For 64-bit capable Intel and AMD processors. Best for machines with more than 3 GB of RAM. This is required for modern Intel-based Apple Macs as well as UEFI PCs booting in CSM mode.
  • 64-bit Mac (amd64+mac): The same as the 64-bit image, but contains support when booting on modern Macintosh systems. This type of image is no longer used in newer releases of Ubuntu MATE as it is integrated.
  • Raspberry Pi 2 and Raspberry Pi 3: See the Raspberry Pi page.

For Raspberry Pi 2 and PowerPC images, please download a newer version.

Burning a DVD or Making a USB

The image can be burned to a DVD, mounted as an ISO file, or be directly written to a USB stick using a utility like dd, but we prefer ddrescue (from the gddrescue package, for example:

sudo apt-get install gddrescue
sudo ddrescue -D --force ubuntu-mate-14.04.2-LTS-desktop-i386.iso /dev/sdx
sudo ddrescue -D --force ubuntu-mate-14.04.2-LTS-desktop-amd64.iso /dev/sdx
sudo ddrescue -D --force ubuntu-mate-14.04.2-LTS-desktop-amd64+mac.iso /dev/sdx

The drive may be mounted on any /dev/sdX so use the command lsblk to check.

If you prefer a graphical tool we recommend using GNOME Disks and the Restore Disk Image… option.

sudo apt-get install gnome-disk-utility

Making a USB with Windows
